Foundation Program

The Foundation Program is a four-semester program designed to help students meet the entrance requirements for their program of choice by offering foundation English, Mathematics, and Science courses.

Students enroll in the required core English, mathematics and science according to their CNA-Q placement test scores and their planned program of study.  Depending on their level at entry, students can complete the Foundation Program in as little as one term.

Students may be eligible to take credit-bearing courses pertinent to their program of choice in their final semester of the Foundation Program pending course availability and overall number of contact hours.

Program Structure


Objectives

Pending on the required preparatory courses, by the end of the Foundation Program, students:

  1. Listen and respond to listenings for up to seven minutes about targeted academic topics.
  2. Read and respond to texts about targeted academic topics up to 750 words.
  3. Give a seven-minute presentation on a targeted academic topic.
  4. Write targeted academic essays of 300 words.
  5. Solve, analyze and apply linear equations.
  6. Use graphing techniques, data management analysis, and algebraic manipulations.
  7. Discuss the fundamental principles of biology.
  8. Discuss fundamental concepts of chemistry and perform basic chemical calculations.

INTERNATIONAL ACCREDITATION

English Language Programs of the Foundation Studies Unit at the College of the North Atlantic-Qatar is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation for the period August 2016 through August 2026 and agrees to uphold the CEA Standards for English Language Programs and Institutions. CEA is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency for English language programs and institutions in the U.S.

Entrance requirements

  1. High school graduation certificate, with an overall average of 60% or higher; 
  2. Minimum required score or higher on the CNA‑Q English Placement Test; and 
  3. Completion of CNA-Q's Math Placement Test

Applicants who do not meet the entrance requirements may be considered on an individual basis. Please contact the Admissions and Registration Department for further information.


Language proficiency Requirements

Applicants who provide evidence of English language proficiency will be exempt from having to take English foundation courses:

  1. The required score on the CNA-Q English Placement Test or a passing score from another approved internationally recognized English language test, as validated by the Admissions and Registration Department.
  2.  A valid IELTS Academic Test Report Form with an overall band of 5.0 with no individual band score (reading, writing, speaking, listening) below 4.5 for diploma programs.
  3. A valid IELTS Academic Test Report Form with an overall band of 5.0 with no individual band score (reading, writing, speaking, listening) below 5.0 for degree programs.

Further Educational Opportunities


Post successful completion of the Foundation Program, students are eligible to enter into their program based on initial Admission basis.
