College of the North Atlantic-Qatar’s (CNA-Q) Advanced Diploma on Diabetes Education was featured in the exhibition for delegates at an international conference on diabetes hosted by Sidra Medicine in Doha this week.
Over three days, hundreds of experts in diabetes from leading health organizations around the world attended the CUDOS Conference, sponsored by Sidra Medicine. As the only institution to offer an advanced diploma in diabetes education in Qatar, CNA-Q was an educational partner at the conference. The College hosted an information booth, and our School of Health Sciences educators attended lectures and workshops.
Conference delegates included Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin J. Al-Thani, Director of Public Health Department, Ministry of Public Health, Qatar, and Dr. Abdullah Al Hamad, Executive Director, Qatar Diabetes Association, Qatar.
“We are honored to be part of this prestigious conference,” said CNA-Q Dean of Health Sciences Dr. Andrea Smilski, who attended a number of conference sessions herself. “The three days were filled with world renowned scientists who presented their research and findings to advance our understanding of the disease, education, practise, and treatment. The conference was very inspiring.”
According to a recent survey, diabetes prevalence among adults is 17-per-cent in Qatar, with 23-per-cent presenting with pre-diabetes. As with most affluent countries around the world, Qatar has seen an increase in the number of children diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Once considered an illness only among adults, there has been a dramatic rise in the incidence of type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents during the past decade. The increasing rate of obesity is a key factor in the rise in type 2 diabetes in children.
CNA-Q’s Advanced diploma on Diabetes Education trains health care professionals to help patients understand their diagnosis and treatment, as well as empower them to develop effective self-care behaviours. Diabetes educators play a vital role in supporting people living with diabetes to manage their condition and achieve optimal health outcomes.
