Academic Preparatory Studies

Academic Preparatory Studies ensure student success in educational programs that meet international certification requirements. It also ensures that students are eligible for Canadian credentials on completion of their studies. These courses are designed to provide secondary school graduates who are weak in English language skills, mathematics and science with the enhancements required to succeed in their program of studies.

In Academic Preparatory Studies students will be provided with support that:

    1. Provides academic bridging for students who do not meet entrance requirements.

    2. Provides English language proficiency training tailored to individual need.

Academic preparatory courses will be offered in the following disciplines:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Physics

Concurrent studies

Through concurrent studies students who do not meet all entrance requirements for any given training program can upgrade their skills while enrolled in program - specific courses.

English for specific purposes

College of the North Atlantic -Qatar offers English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses which are designed to prepare students for success in their academic studies and the workplace. ESP courses focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing, and are offered at multiple levels and degrees of intensity: full-time and part-time. Students enrolled in the pa`rt-time ESP courses take academic preparatory, and/or program courses concurrently. This is an immersion program where the college environment serves as a laboratory for learning. As a result, students inherently participate in an English language environment through involvement in activities that require specific language proficiencies.

Objectives

    1. To serve the general language needs of students of any nationality.
    2. To support the language needs of students destined for other college
programs. 3. To prepare students for participation in the global economy.

Preparatory courses are designed to help alleviate specific weaknesses in students skills and gaps in their knowledge.

Entrance requirements

Students wishing to register at College are required to achieve the designated score on the College entrance examination. There are two types of entrance examinations: the Academic English Examination and the General English Examination. Based on the preferred program of study, the appropriate entrance examination will be administered. The Academic Entrance Examination is a computer-based examination which samples listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The General English Examination is a paper-based examination and samples grammar, reading and oral proficiencies. Students who meet entrance requirements, admitted to a college program and need language training will be automatically admitted to the Language Studies courses.

To address the needs of the students with their programs of study, the Language Studies Department offers an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Curriculum. As a bridge between language studies and academic/technical programs, ESP at CNA-Q is based on students' language needs and the college's program needs. It is a learning process where students acquire general English and discipline-related language skills, which will evolve over time. This flexible program is developed in collaboration with other college departments to foster language learning across the curriculum. In addition, an adult learning context will enable students to build language skills that they will use throughout their college career and encourage lifelong learning.

ESP course levels

The ESP streams for each program area manage the resources required for the curriculum and oversee accuracy and quality from a content perspective. The language courses range from a Low-Beginner to Advanced language levels. The ESP streams are:

  • Information Technology
  • Business
  • Engineering
  • Health Sciences
  • Pre-Nursing
  • TPP

Knowledge of and skills in the English language will be a requirement for individuals who want to train in English speaking institutions or work in environments where English is the primary language spoken.
