Pharmacy Technician

Program

Students completing the Pharmacy Technician program will be able to understand the practice of hospital and community pharmacy. This knowledge will enable them to become vital members of the health care team.

Objectives

The students will gain the following skills from the program:

1. To communicate effectively with patients, pharmacists, other colleagues and with health care providers in the scope of their profession.

2. To receive and prioritize written prescriptions and verbal requests accurately in compliance with legislation, established standards, policies and procedures.

3. To dispense and release pharmaceutical products accurately and efficiently in compliance with legislation, established standards, policies and procedures.

4. To practice competently and safely within a legal and ethical framework.

5. To collaborate with the pharmacist and other health care team members to support and promote the patient's health, well being and lifestyle.

6. To contribute to the application of effective business principles in the pharmacy practice setting.

7. To operate computers and other technological tools to assist in the provision of optimal pharmaceutical care and pharmacy services.

Career options

Program graduates may obtain employment in a variety of pharmacy practice areas such as:

  • Hospital Pharmacy in a government or private setting.
  • Community Pharmacy in a retail pharmacy or government/private clinic.
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing following additional company training.

Entrance Requirements

1. High School completion with an overall 60% average in:

  • English Language - Grade 12 level
  • Academic Mathematics - Grade 12 level or Advanced Math - Grade 12 level
  • Two Grade 12 level Science courses selected from: Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics.

Applicants who do not meet the Science requirement may be admitted to the Pre-Health Sciences curriculum, designed to provide upgrading in the basic skills required for successful completion of allied health training programs.

OR

Applicants who do not meet the entrance requirements and are 19 years of age or older, may be considered on an individual basis under the Mature Student Clause.

2. Successful completion of the Skills Placement Assessment

Important Note

All students must have a medical assessment completed. Any student not deemed to be medically fit to complete the program will be required to withdraw. Any costs associated with completing the medical assessment will be the student's responsibility. Students sponsored by Hamad Medical Corporation will have the medical completed as part of their contract obligations with HMC. The College will assist other students to complete the process during the first semester.

Students must possess a valid standard First Aid certificate and Cardiopulmonary (Level C) certificate to be eligible for a Diploma from the School of Health Sciences
