Paramedicine

Program

The Paramedicine program will prepare students to work internationally. The program meets Canadian, American and Qatari national standards. Two exit points provide flexibility - the exit after Level 1 allows graduates to work as ambulance attendants or Emergency Medical Technician - Basic, while completing the full program qualifies graduates to the higher level of Emergency Medical Technician- Intermediate or Primary Care Paramedic. Graduates may work as volunteers or professional paramedics in a variety of settings, including urban, suburban, rural, remote, industrial, hospital, air ambulance, or military service. Graduates with suitable professional experience will be eligible for further advanced studies.

Objectives

1. To equip the student with the knowledge and life support skills necessary to assess and treat the sick and injured in a pre- hospital emergency care setting.

2. To foster feelings of respect and genuine concern for all individuals.

3. To develop in students the ability to communicate and function cooperatively with team colleagues.

4. To develop problem solving skills that promote logical thinking and independent decisions for appropriate patient care.

The aims of clinical training portion of the program are:

1. To ensure that the student can accurately and confidently perform the many and varied examinations and procedures that are carried out on a daily basis by the paramedic.

2. To ensure that the student has performed the number and variety of examinations and procedures required to complete the course.

3. To discipline the student to the working conditions of the paramedic.

Students will receive instruction by the clinical instructors in emergency medical procedures which can best be demonstrated and observed under clinical conditions, will receive review lectures and will be evaluated academically and clinically. Clinical training occurs at sites of Hamad Medical Corporation.

Entrance Requirements

1. High School completion with an overall 60% average in:

  • English Language - Grade 12 level
  • Academic Mathematics - Grade 12 level or Advanced Math - Grade 12 level
  • Two Grade 12 level Science courses selected from: Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics.

Applicants who do not meet the Science requirement may be admitted to the Pre-Health Sciences curriculum, designed to provide upgrading in the basic skills required for successful completion of allied health training programs.

OR

Applicants who do not meet the entrance requirements and are 19 years of age or older, may be considered on an individual basis under the Mature Student Clause.

2. Successful completion of the Skills Placement Assessment

Important Note

All students must have a medical assessment completed. Any student not deemed to be medically fit to complete the program will be required to withdraw. Any costs associated with completing the medical assessment will be the student's responsibility. Students sponsored by Hamad Medical Corporation will have the medical completed as part of their contract obligations with HMC. The College will assist other students to complete the process during the first semester.

Students rotate through the sites of Hamad Medical Corporation. Night, evening and/or weekend shifts may be required. Students must wear a uniform during clinical experiences.

Students must possess a valid Standard First Aid certificate and Cardiopulmonary (Level C) certificate to be eligible for a Diploma from the School of Health Sciences.
