Dental Hand Instrumentation

Instrument Transfer is one of the basic functions the dental assistant performs in fourhanded dentistry. In this course, students will learn to efficiently transfer instruments and materials to the operator to ensure productivity and safety while reducing fatigue and stress. The course will emphasize instrument identification and classification, basic rules of instrument transfer, tray setup, potential instrument problems, one- and two-handed transfer, transfer modifications, safe instrument handling and instrument maintenance.

Dental Infection Control

2 Day course

This continuing education course is designed to introduce the student to the principles of infection control. Microbial diseases relative to dentistry are discussed with emphasis on disease transmission. Personal protection, surface disinfection and sterilization protocols will be explained and demonstrated. Students will have “hands on” experience in a simulated dental clinic.

Dental Tooth Morphology

Tooth morphology is the study of the structure and form of teeth. This course will introduce the location, eruption schedule and function of each tooth in the primary and permanent dentition. The terminology presented in this course is the building block for the dental terminology.

Dental Professional Ethics

This course provides an introduction to the topic of professional ethics. The student will be introduced to the ethical and legal expectations of the profession and workplace. Students will consider their role in their professional team and will develop an understanding of the standards of conduct and their obligation in the interaction with other professionals and clients.

Food Safety Level I

Date: February 13 & 20, 2008

This course will examine the introductory aspects of food microbiology and its relationship to food quality and food safety protection. An examination of the major types of food products will be included, with special emphasis on the factors contributing to the growth of spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms and the means in which they can be controlled. The student will receive training in basic food safety. Lab sessions will familiarize students with various food safety evaluation techniques as well as the calibration and the use of testing equipment used to promote food safety.

Food Safety Level II

Date: March 12 & 19, 2008

This course will further examine the aspects of food safety and a successful food safety program. A detailed analysis of the importance of the HACCP system will be illustrated and its significance to food protection and public health safety. Case studies and current literature provide an up to date study of the pathogens that can be acquired through food and the state-of-the-art mitigation strategies. Emerging issues current to the food safety industry will be discussed and examined.

Lab sessions will familiarize students with various food safety procedures and the types of testing equipment used to determine their effectiveness. In addition, field trips will be planned to provide examples of food safety inspection practices and interventions. Students who successfully complete the course will receive advanced food safety certification.

Emergency First Aid

Emergency level first aid is a state-of-the-art, modular, course of basic first aid skills and other select subjects needed to sustain life and manage the scene of an injury. Standard level first aid is a modular course for those who want to learn more first aid skills. Both Emergency Level Aid and Standard First Aid are built on the same core and elective lesson and courses include a written exam. Electives are based on regional or community needs and interests.
